Caillean Galayde - Week 6 Devlog


Hi!

I'm Caillean Galayde and for this leg of the project my job was to come up with ideas for some of our game's inventory items. I needed to make a captain's hat, a flag, a tool to cut vines with, an item to use as a key for our jungle island, and a shovel. When making my sketches I looked up references for the items on google images and pinterest, which both provided a wide range of ideas to help me with my designs. I came up with multiple versions of each item so that our team was able to decide which one fit the best with our game style.  I tried to include aspects in the items that tied them in to our pirate/jungle game story such as having the flags attached to sticks, and making the key item with leaf inspiration. The hat item was an easy decision because our main character had already had mock-ups made with the first design, but I still created another just in case. After our initial check-in on the items, we decided to swap the flag out for a map because it fit better in our game plan to have different islands and travel between them. For the vine cutting tool, our team decided to go with the machete style tool, but keeping in mind that this game is targeted towards kids, we are giving it a wooden appearance instead of something more realistic. Jungle island key item was more open to interpretation in its design and we went with the leaf styled compass. For the shovel item I simply came up with four different sizes/styles of shovels and we chose the one the team liked the most.

For the next leg of our project I will be moving to the computer and creating digital versions of these items as well as working on base color for some of our environments.
